Coulter College Workshop
Led by Drs. Kukke and Raub, six students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering applied for and attended the Coulter College Workshop, August 13-16th, held at the Hyatt Regency in Coral Gables, FL. Lily DelValle, Kolby Faria, Paul Goebel, Darius Kodjo, Brooke Petery, and Louis Simpson addressed the problem of manual, poorly-controlled drainage of cerebrospinal fluid from patients with traumatic brain injuries by interviewing neurosurgeons at Washington Hospital Center and Children’s National Hospital, as well as physiatrists, nurses, and trauma specialists involved at various stages of the treatment process. Over the course of the workshop, they learned from experts in the field about topics in the design, patent, compliance, and regulatory processes for bringing an innovative biomedical design concept to market. They made two presentations to groups of expert panelists. All six students are continuing to develop ideas from the workshop in their CUA senior design course.
