Entrance Requirements

For regular admission status, students will be admitted to the program based upon enrollment availability and their ability to meet the following recommended entrance requirements:

 

• Students must have received a bachelors degree in engineering, science or mathematics from an accredited institution and in addition, must satisfy:
  • All minimum university requirements.
• A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 (masters) or 3.5 out of 4.0 (doctoral).
• A cumulative GRE (verbal plus quantitative) score of at least 1250 (masters) or 1300 (doctoral).

 

Students not meeting the above minimum requirements may be admitted on a provisional basis as determined by the department chairman in consultation with the BME graduate committee.  Performance of provisional students will be reviewed after two semesters of graduate study for transfer to regular admission status.

 

Students from non-engineering disciplines may be required to take pre-requisite courses (e.g. statics, dynamics, electrical circuits, differential equations, fluid mechanics, etc.).
 

Application Process

For consideration for admittance to the program, students must submit:

• A completed  application for graduate admission.
• Official transcripts of all undergraduate coursework and post secondary studies
• Three (3) official letters of recommendation
• GRE scores (no more than 5 years old) must be submitted directly to CUA by the testing service. CUA's test codes are: GRE-5104 and TOEFL-5104.
• A written statement of research goals and objectives (500-750 words) addressing:
  • How would you describe your ability and commitment to undertake graduate education?
  • What are your proposed career goals?
  • What are of biomedical engineering are you most interested? Why?
  • What influenced your decision to apply to The Catholic University of America?

 

• For international students, language proficiency must be demonstrated  (TOEFL exam)
